VISUAL IDENTITY GUIDE

Fonts/Typography

The Garamond (preferably, Berthold Garamond) and Goudy Sans typeface families should be used on all external communications. These families are also preferred for internal communications and are required for any document that has a shelf life of three months or more. Consistent use of these families establishes an image for the University that is instantly recognizable and increasingly memorable.

The University of Alabama wordmark uses a derivative of the Baker Signet typeface family. So that the wordmark retains its uniqueness, Baker Signet must not be used for any other purpose in a University publication. The wordmark and nameplate must not be re-created—only use the original files.

Other typefaces may be used for publications with event-specific circulations. A holiday program or special event, for instance, may use a typeface appropriate to the occasion.

Because of the cost and the complicating need to run Adobe Type Manager on Windows machines in order to use the licensed Adobe fonts stipulated in the University's printed visual identity guide, the Office of Marketing Communications has worked with others on campus to find alternative sources for these typefaces. In general usage, the campus will use the TrueType version of Goudy Sans and will substitute standard versions of Garamond for Berthold Garamond.

A free copy of Goudy Sans Regular for Windows or Macintosh can be downloaded from http://www.fontsite.com/Pages/FFDownloads.html. Please note that the only weights of Goudy Sans that should be used are Book and Medium. Never use Bold—at heavier weights the font loses proportionality with the wordmark and text faces. As a substitute for Berthold Garamond, Windows users should use their standard Garamond (the Monotype version that comes with Windows) and Mac users should use their standard AGaramond or Garamond.

Designers on campus are encouraged to use the Adobe fonts and can purchase them directly from www.adobe.com.
